It is with heavy hearts that we remember the passing of the legendary actor Robert Blake at the age of 89. He left us quietly, surrounded by his loved ones after battling ongoing cardiac problems. Noreen Austin, Blake’s beloved niece, shared this sad news.
A Remarkable Career
Robert Blake had a remarkable and lengthy career in Hollywood, spanning several decades. He made his acting debut as a child in 1939, in the uncredited role of “Bridal Suite.” From there, he went on to captivate audiences in films like “In Cold Blood” and “Baretta,” accumulating nearly 150 acting credits throughout his illustrious career.
His incredible talent was widely recognized, and he received four Emmy nominations, winning one for his memorable performance in “Baretta.” Blake’s final dramatic role was in the murder mystery “Lost Highway,” released in 1997.
A Tragic Chapter
However, while remembering this iconic actor, we cannot ignore the events that unfolded in the final quarter of his life. Many have been haunted by the terrible crime Blake was accused of, while others reflect on his distinguished career.
In May 2001, tragedy struck when Robert Blake’s second wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, was found dead in his car. The circumstances were shocking and led to worldwide news coverage. Blake was eventually charged with Bakley’s murder, an accusation that stunned the entire world.
Throughout the court case, Blake vehemently denied any involvement in Bakley’s death. He maintained his innocence, claiming that after dinner, he left her in the car and returned to find her lifeless. Despite spending a year in jail, Blake continued to share his version of events, even giving an interview with Barbara Walters in 2003.
An Acquittal and a Bittersweet Victory
For Blake, Bakley’s passing was tied to her troubled past. He believed that someone whose life she had ruined had been watching her on television.
After a lengthy legal battle, on March 29, 2005, Robert Blake was found not guilty of the murder accusation. However, despite the acquittal, his reputation was never fully restored.
While we remember the tragic events that marked the final years of his life, let us also celebrate the incredible talent and contributions Robert Blake made to the world of entertainment. His talent and charm will be remembered by audiences forever. May he rest in peace.
